Peppermint – Essential Oil (Mentha piperita)

SKU: 15151

Many people don’t know that Peppermint is actually a natural cross between two types of mint (water mint and spearmint) and, while it is native to the Mediterranean, it grows throughout Europe and North America. Despite the fact that mint has been used for health purposes for several thousand years, and is mentioned in records from ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt, it was not recognized as a distinct kind of mint until the 1700’s. Versatile and easily recognized by its scent, Peppermint is probably one of the most popular oils in the world.

Peppermint essential oil has been found to eliminate harmful bacteria, relieve muscle spasms and flatulence, disinfect and soothe inflamed skin, and to release muscle tension when used in a massage. When diluted with a carrier oil and rubbed into the feet, it can work as a natural and effective fever reducer. Peppermint also acts as an astringent that closes pores and tightens the skin. It’s cooling yet warming sensations make it an effective anesthetic that leaves the skin numb to pain and calms redness and inflammation and its expectorant properties clear the nasal passageway to promote the relief of congestion and to encourage easy breathing. It is also believed to stimulate circulation, reduce feelings of nervous tension, soothe feelings of irritability, boost energy, and enhance mental focus.

How to use:

Peppermint combines well with Lavender to help alleviate a headache and soothe sore muscles. Add 10 drops of Lavender and 5 drops of Peppermint to 9.5ml of carrier oil and pour into a roll-on bottle. For tension headaches, apply to the back of the neck. Other headaches respond well when the oil is applied to the forehead, making sure that the oil doesn’t get into the eyes.

Blending tip: Peppermint tends to take over a blend (scent wise) until you can’t smell anything else. Less is best when blending with more lightly scented oils like Lemon or Frankincense while florals like Rose and Jasmine are best left for blending with less aggressive oils.

Cautions & Contraindications:

Should not be used while pregnant or breastfeeding. Should be avoided by anyone with a history of seizures or hypertension. Should not be used on children under the age of 7. Can cause wakefulness.  For external use only. May irritate the skin, dilute before using.
