Nutmeg is from a tropical evergreen tree that is native to the Moluccus, or Spice Islands, of Indonesia and is principally cultivated there and in the West Indies. Commonly used by the ancient Greeks and Romans as a brain tonic, it was also known as an aphrodisiac and brain stimulant. The essential oil is extracted from the fruit and seeds by steam distillation.
Nutmeg has a scent that is warm and spicy. This essential oil can help to fight stress, manage depression and anxiety and ease fatigue. It acts as both a stimulant and a sedative and is used in Chinese medicine to ease joint swelling and muscle pain. Nutmeg also acts as a carminative and antispasmodic when we are having digestive issues.
