Citronella oil is an essential oil that’s made from the distillation of the Asian grass plant in the Cymbopogon genus. This fragrant grass got its name from the French word meaning “lemon balm,” due to its floral, citrus-like aroma. Citronella is a tall grass grown in Asia with a crisp, fresh aroma. It is soothing to the skin and creates an uplifting atmosphere.

Used in aromatherapy applications, Citronella Essential Oil slows or prevents the growth or spread of harmful airborne bacteria, repels flying insects, uplifts negative moods, and relaxes the body and mind. It is reputed to reduce muscles spasms, ease headaches, and boost energy. Citronella essential oil is a known powerful insect repellent and is great for camping and during any outdoor activities.

Blends well with: Cedarwood, Geranium, Sandalwood, Lemon, Lime and Orange.

How to use: 

  • Diffuse to ward off insects, especially mosquitoes. 
  • Apply to skin with Coconut Oil for use as a topical insect repellent.

Cautions and contraindications:

This oil may interact with certain drugs, may contain methyleugenol, and can cause skin sensitization. Never use essential oils undiluted, in eyes or mucus membranes.  Keep away from children.

Before using topically, perform a small patch test on your inner forearm or back by applying a small quantity of diluted essential oil and apply a bandage. If there is no reaction after 48 hours it should be safe to use. Wash the area with soap and water. if you experience any irritation. While Citronella oil is a popular mosquito repellent, the citronella plant is toxic to pets. Use caution when using citronella products around your pet, and make sure they don’t have access to any citronella plants in your garden.
