Vanilla is indigenous to Mexico, South America, South Africa and India and It originated from an Island of Madagascar. Vanilla is a pod or fruit from orchids of the genus Vanilla, primarily obtained from pods of the Mexican species, flat-leaved vanilla. The word vanilla, derived from vainilla, the diminutive of the Spanish word vaina, is translated simply as “little pod”.

Vanilla is the only fruit-bearing member of the orchid family and is native to central Mexico. There are over 150 varieties of vanilla plants and no two vanilla pods are the same in flavour, aroma, or color. Vanilla was first cultivated by the ancient Totonac people on the East coast of Mexico who were the first to learn how to use the fruit. After their defeat by the Aztecs, they were forced to relinquish control of the exotic fruit. The only way to extract the aromatic compounds of the vanilla pod is to introduce a solvent such as alcohol. Aromatic, concentrated oils from plants derived by solvent are referred to as an “absolute.”

Vanilla is used traditionally to calm the nervous system and to relax the mind and body, add Vanilla to a carrier oil and massage into the feet, neck, stomach and chest. Vanilla is traditionally used for its antispasmodic properties and may provide relief from PMS cramps and muscle aches. Vanilla has been used traditionally for the to strengthen the scalp and hair by increasing blood flow to the scalp.
