Chamomile Roman (Chamaemelum nobile) – Essential Oil

This particular plant has been used throughout history to treat a wide variety of symptoms. Ancient Egyptians used it to reduce fever. Greek physicians would prescribe it to patients to reduce fever and ease symptoms of female troubles. Roman chamomile essential oil has analgesic, antispasmodic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant, carminative, cholagogue, cicatrisant, emmenagogue, febrifuge, sedative, nervine, digestive, stomachic and vermifuge properties.
Roman chamomile essential oil has been used as a mild sedative to calm nerves and reduce anxiety by promoting relaxation. Inhaling Roman chamomile is one of the best ways to utilize essential oils for anxiety. The fragrance is carried directly to the brain and serves as an emotional trigger. Research shows that Roman chamomile has been used for relief of depressive and anxiety symptoms.
When applied topically after adding to a carrier oil, Roman chamomile oil helps relieve skin irritations that may be due to food allergies or sensitivities. Roman chamomile has been used as a natural remedy for eczema, wounds, ulcers, gout, skin irritations, bruises, burns, canker cores, and even skin conditions like cracked nipples, chicken pox, ear and eye infections, poison ivy. Place a few drops of Roman chamomile in a steam bath and inhale it for sinus inflammation, hay fever, sore throat, and ear inflammation, and as a painkiller.
Add 4-12 drops to a bowl of steaming water/facial steamer. Inhale slowly and deeply for 5-10 minutes.
Add 5 drops to 20ml carrier oil for massage.
Add 5 drops to 10ml carrier oil for skin care.
Cautions and contraindications:
Any person with seasonal allergies to ragweed or other seasonal plants, including chrysanthemums, marigolds, or daisies, should avoid using chamomile because these plants are in the same family as chamomile. The safety of chamomile has not been well established for pregnant or nursing mothers for children, or for those with liver or kidney disease.
