This plant has grown along the Volga River for centuries and was known to the west as Russian Rhubarb. The leaves are rough and palmate shaped. The root is thick, sending off long tapering branches. The inside of the root is a deep yellow colour. The leaves are somewhat toxic and therefore the stalk and root are commonly used.

The history of Turkey Rhubarb dates back as far as 3200 BC.  It  has been said to be the ancient Sanskrit remedy called Soma, for courage, wisdom and longevity. It was known for its cleansing abilities, constipation issues and for fevers. Turkey Rhubarb became a desirable commodity in the ancient world and was a popular trade item on the Silk Road throughout Europe and Asia. I’s use was a popular medicinal plant in the Chinese Empire and a key trade item for Imperial Russia.

Rhubarb Root Powder acts as a simple and safe purgative and laxative. It has a truly cleansing action upon the gut, removing debris and then having an astringent and antiseptic action as well.

Properties :

The taste is bitter and astringent. The energy of Turkey Rhubarb is purgative and cathartic. The energy is cool, dry and light. In Traditional Chinese medicine it is said to work with the heart and small intestines. The energy is yin.

It has an affinity for the liver, gall bladder, stomach and bowels. Blends well with Chamomile, Licorice Root, Cascara Bark, Barberry Root, Ginger Root and Marshmallow Root.

How to use:

1/2-1 teaspoon of Turkey Rhubarb Powder to one cup of water and steep for 10 minutes. Drink in the morning and evening. Can be used with Marshmallow Root for relief of griping.

Cautions & contraindications:

Should be avoided if intestinal obstruction is suspected. Do not consume if pregnant or breast feeding.
