Tansy is a member of the Asteraceae family has serrated fern-like leaves and the flowers are in small clusters and bright yellow in colour.  Tansy is native to Europe and Asia in temperate climates. Tansy is now naturalized in many countries and is sometimes considered an invasive species. The aerial portions of the plant are aromatic and the scent is like Camphor with a hint of Rosemary. The Tansy flowers are long lasting and the seeds are able to survive the winter. 

The volatile oil “thujone” is contained in the leaves and flowers. Tansy was reported to have grown in the gardens of Charlemagne and by Benedictine monks of the Swiss monastery of Saint Gall. It was used as a strewing herb to repel pests and sometimes worn in the shoes. Tansy has a long history of use in traditional European herbalism for its beneficial properties. It was used in infusions and washes for topical use. It is sometimes used for dying fabric. 

In Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used for sprains, epilepsy, rheumatism and gout and externally as a douche for vaginal discharge. The herb is said to be effective against worms and has traditionally been used for enemas.

Properties:

Tansy in Eastern medicine is said to move Qi, clear dampness and dissolve phlegm. It has an affinity for the stomach, spleen, bladder and liver.  

Tansy has a long history of use as a medical herb  despite its toxicity.  Its leaves and flowers may be toxic if consumed in quantity. Because of this, it is no longer recommended for internal use. It was traditionally used for intestinal worms, digestive issues and stimulating menstruation.

How to use:

1 teaspoon of Tansy to one cup of boiling water. Simmer for 15 minutes, strain and drink up to three cups a day.

Use topically or as an enema. For intestinal worms use with Wormwood and Chamomile.

Cautions & contraindications:

Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Consult your Health Practitioner for dosage amount.
