The tangerine tree is an evergreen tree that grows 10 to 15 feet tall, although older trees have reached 25 feet. Tangerine is a variety of mandarin that looks like an orange but smaller, reddish orange in colour and has a flat shape. Belonging to the mandarin orange species of the family Rutaceae which includes Orange, Grapefruit, Lime and Bergamot. Tangerine is native to Southeast Asia and spread westward along trade routes, ending up in Europe in 1805 and a little later to South America. The fruit is cultivated in the subtropical regions around the world, especially in the southern United States.
