Helichrysum arenarium, also known as Sandy Everlasting, is herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family and it is native to Europe, Central Asia and China.
The name Helichrysum is derived from the ancient Greek word helios meaning “sun” and chrysos meaning “gold”. “Gold sun” giving tribute to its bright yellow, aromatic flowers that have a spicy and slightly bitter taste.
These bright yellow flowers are generally harvested before they open to preserve the precious scent they carry to be used for teas and essential oil. This oil is often used in skin care products.
Helichrysum is a golden ceremonial tea that is referred to as ‘the dreaming tea’ as it may induce vivid dreams. It is best known for its anti-aging and sedative properties. Primarily used to help prevent scarring and reduce healing time. Used to decrease swelling, pain and redness in tissue, joint and muscles. In many areas of South Africa it is used as an aphrodisiac and food source.
The flowers have a long tradition in European ethnomedicine for skin remedies.
