Calendula was used in Mediterranean countries since the 12th century although now it grows and is used by herbalists all over the world. Calendula works on topical skin irritation or wounds caused by damp heat. Calendula tends to be slightly drying and cooling but the resins in the plant also make it slightly warming. It has been used topically for skin conditions that are red, inflamed and sometimes oozing. Throughout history Calendula has been used to facilitate healing of minor cuts, scratches and wounds and to cool inflamed skin conditions such as rashes, eczema and psoriasis.
