Ashwagandha’s history can be traced back to around 6000 BC, where it is essentially intertwined with the history of Ayurveda. To this day, it is still considered one of the most important Ayurvedic herbs. It was appraised to be a powerful herb that rejuvenated the whole system and improved one’s lifespan.

This herb is commonly known as the Indian Ginseng or Winter Cherry. Native to India, it is a small flowering shrub. In Sanskrit, the word Ashwagandha means “smell of the horse”, which is perhaps a reference to its sharp small and potential properties as a strength enhancer. 

Properties:

Energetics and taste of Ashwagandha are warming, sweet bitter, dry and pungent. It effect the meridians of the heart and kidneys. Ashwagandha supports the endocrine system, nervous system, immune system, cardiovascular system, thyroid and pancreas.

Combine Ashwagandha with Holy Basil (Tulsi), Rhodiola or Schisandra for possible stress or anxiety and to support endocrine and immune systems. For the nervous system mix Ashwagandha with Lemon Balm, Rose or Skullcap. For the pancreas and to support blood sugar combine with Moringa, Fenugreek or True Cinnamon. 

How to use:

1 teaspoon of Ashwagandha Root to one cup of boiling water. Simmer for 15 minutes, strain and drink up to three cups a day.

Or add 1 tsp of powder to liquid or food and take 1 teaspoon one to three times daily.

Cautions & contraindications:

Ashwagandha might increase thyroid hormone levels; thus, should be used cautiously or avoided if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid hormone medications.
