The Artichoke is one of the world’s oldest vegetables. It is a variety of Thistle and a very large perennial plant that is a member of the Asteraceae, or Daisy family. It was first grown in eastern Africa and then made its way to Europe via Egypt. Images of Artichokes are found on ancient Egyptian papyri and on sacrificial altars.

Artichoke leaves are traditionally used as a gentle bitter tonic and restorative. Detoxifying to the liver, gallbladder and pancreas cells and functions, and stimulating digestive juices such as bile and gastric acids. 

Properties:

The energetics and taste of Artichoke leaf is bitter, cooling and moist. Artichoke Leaf supports the liver, gallbladder, digestive system and kidneys. For the liver, gallbladder and digestion combine artichoke with Dandelion Root, Milk Thistle or Turmeric Root. For kidneys combine Artichoke Leaf with Dandelion Leaf, Cleavers or Nettle Leaf.

How to use:

1/2 – 1 teaspoon of Artichoke Leaf to one cup of boiling water. Simmer for 15 minutes, strain and drink up to three cups a day.
