Anise was first cultivated in Egypt and the Middle East and was brought to Europe for its medicinal value. It has been cultivated in Egypt for approximately 4000 years. According to plant historians, Anise was highly prized by Ancient Romans, who baked the Seeds into spicy cakes that were served at the end of feasts in order to prevent flatulence, hiccups and indigestion that could befall dinner guests. Anise made a dandy breath freshener. It was valued as a treatment for stubborn coughs and sore throats and it is still used for this purpose today. It is also used to flavour baked goods, fruit, cheese, candy and soups.

Properties:

The energetics and taste of Anise seed is bitter, pungent and warming. It has an affinity towards the lungs, digestive system and hormones. Anise Seed may have estrogen like properties and that may support menopause and menstrual cramping combined with Hops Flower, Black Cohosh and Motherwort. For clearing damp lung conditions Anise Seed can be combined with Pleurisy Root, Fenugreek and Plantain Leaf. For gas and bloating Anise can be combined with Lavender, Lemon balm and Ginger Root. 

How to use:

1 teaspoon of Anise Seed to one cup of boiling water. Simmer for 15 minutes, strain and drink up to three cups a day.

Cautions & contraindications:

Anise might act like estrogen. Avoid if you have breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis or uterine fibroids.
