Codonopsis is a tender twining perennial with soft oval leaves and delicate bell-shaped flowers in shades of greenish purple. She can climb gracefully up to five feet, reaching for the light. Native to the mountainous regions of China and East Asia, Codonopsis is now cultivated worldwide—sometimes admired simply for her beauty, but most treasured for her long, sweet taproot.
Beneath the soil, her root grows thick, sweet, and grounding. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this root is called Dang Shen, a revered herb used for centuries to gently tonify Qi (vital energy) and act as a mild adaptogen. Often called “Poor Man’s Ginseng,” Dang Shen offers many of ginseng’s strengthening qualities, but with a softer, harmonious touch.
