Eyebright (Eyebright)

Eyebright is a small meadow herb native to Europe and naturalized in parts of North America. It grows low to the ground in grassy, open areas and produces delicate white flowers marked with purple veining and a yellow centre. The aerial parts are the primary part used in herbal tradition.

As its name suggests, Eyebright has a long history of traditional use in herbalism for the eyes and upper respiratory system. In folk and Western herbal practice, it has been used as a supportive herb for tired, irritated, or sensitive eyes, particularly where there is watering, redness, or seasonal discomfort. It is traditionally valued for its gentle astringent nature, which has been associated with a toning and soothing effect on delicate mucous membranes.

Eyebright has also been used in traditional seasonal formulas when the eyes feel strained from environmental exposure such as wind, pollen, smoke, or extended visual fatigue. Herbalists often describe it as a plant that supports “clarity and comfort” in the head and eyes, especially when the tissues feel over-responsive or inflamed in a mild, reactive way.

Beyond eye use, it is also included in traditional herbalism for sinus and upper respiratory support, particularly where congestion and irritation occur together.

Traditional Herbal Actions

Eyebright is considered gently astringent and mildly aromatic, with a traditional affinity for the eyes, sinuses, and mucous membranes of the head.

It is often combined with herbs such as Chamomile, Elderflower, and Peppermint in seasonal support blends, or with Plantain and Rose in soothing preparations for irritated tissues.

How to Use

Steep 1 teaspoon of dried herb in 1 cup of hot water for 10–15 minutes. Strain very thoroughly before use. Traditionally taken as a tea or used as a cooled compress in folk herbal practice.

Cautions

Not recommended during pregnancy unless guided by a qualified practitioner.
Ensure all external preparations are fully strained before use near the eyes.
