Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) is a small, delicate wild plant characterized by its tiny, white or pale purple flowers featuring intricate violet stripes and a vivid yellow spot at the center. Visually, the flower resembles a bloodshot eye with a bright iris—a feature that led historic herbalists to associate the plant with eye care. Eyebright is a semi-parasitic plant, meaning its roots attach to the roots of neighboring grasses and plants to absorb water and nutrients, though it still produces its own food through photosynthesis.
Eyebright belongs to the family Orobanchaceae (formerly classified under Scrophulariaceae). It is native to Europe, Western Asia, and North America, thriving in grassy meadows, subalpine pastures, and heathlands. The genus name Euphrasia stems from the Greek word Euphrosyne, which translates to "gladness" or "cheer," referencing the joy and comfort brought to those whose eyesight or comfort was restored by the herb.
Eyebright has a rich history in European traditional herbalism dating back to the Middle Ages. Renowned 17th-century herbalist Nicholas Culpeper famously praised the herb, noting its remarkable ability to clear and strengthen vision. Traditionally, Eyebright was harvested as a whole aerial herb (leaves, stems, and flowers) and prepared as a soothing tea, compress, or eyewash to relieve tired, irritated eyes and manage upper respiratory congestion.
Rich in active plant compounds, Eyebright contains iridoid glycosides (such as aucubin), flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic acids. These compounds provide natural astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant benefits. Aucubin, in particular, offers soothing properties, while the tannins help dry up excess fluid and tighten swollen mucosal tissues.
Historically, Eyebright has been prized for its affinity for the eyes, sinuses, and mucous membranes. It is commonly used in traditional practices to ease symptoms of seasonal allergies, conjunctivitis (pink eye), watery eyes, sinusitis, and nasal catarrh (runny nose). The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia recognizes Eyebright for its astringent and anti-catarrhal actions, specifically indicating it for eye inflammation, nasal congestion, and middle ear conditions.
