Cumin Seed

Cumin is a flowering plant in the parsley family, Apiaceae. Native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Asia, cumin has been cultivated for thousands of years for its aromatic seeds, which are widely used as a culinary spice. The plant grows on slender stems and produces small white or pink flowers that develop into elongated brown seeds known as cumin seeds.

Today, cumin is grown in many parts of the world, with India being the largest producer. It is a staple ingredient in many cuisines, including Indian, Middle Eastern, North African, Latin American, and Mexican cooking. Cumin is commonly found in curry powders, chili blends, spice rubs, soups, stews, and vegetable dishes, adding a warm, earthy, and slightly nutty flavour.

Cumin has a long history of traditional use dating back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It was valued both as a spice and for its digestive-supporting properties. In Ayurvedic and traditional herbal practices, cumin is often used to support healthy digestion and is commonly combined with coriander and fennel seeds to make the well-known CCF tea.
