White Peony, also known as Chinese Peony, is a perennial plant with large round white flowers. It is propagated through seed. White Peony (Paeonia lactiflora) is a member of the Paeoniaceae family and native to central and eastern Asia. White peony is one of the oldest plants cultivated for its flowers, going back to 2000 B.C.E. in China. Peony is now widely found outside Asia and grown in many countries as an ornamental plant. Brought to Japan by Buddhist monks from China, where it is still considered today to be a symbol of prosperity. Peony is named after Paeon, the Greek physician of the gods, in the middle ages it was used to protect against the evil eye.
The root of White Peony was extensively used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as Tibetan and Siberian folk herbal practices. The root was typically harvested and dried. The dried root was then boiled in a decoction. It was traditionally used for nervous system disorders such as epilepsy and muscle spasms as well as menstrual irregularity in women. White Peony was also used for liver associated problems and considered to improve liver function and nourish the blood.
Properties:
The taste and energetics of White Peony Root are bitter, salty and cold. White Peony has an affinity for the nervous system, liver, uterus and ovaries. For liver support combine White Peony root with Dandelion Root. For menstrual regulation and support, combine with Motherwort or Raspberry Leaf.
How to use:
Add 1 teaspoon of cut White Peony root to a cup of boiling water. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, strain and drink up to 3 cups per day.
