The maca plant, known scientifically as Lepidium meyenii, is sometimes referred to as Peruvian ginseng. It mainly grows in the Andes of central Peru, in harsh conditions and at extremely high altitudes — above 13,000 feet (4,000 meters). Maca root has been an important food for the native people in the Andes of Peru, including the Incas, for at least 2,000 years. It is eaten baked, dried, mixed with milk, or in a variety of other forms and dishes.
Maca is a cruciferous vegetable and therefore related to broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale. It has a long history of culinary and medicinal use in Peru. Maca root powder is very nutritious and is a great source of several important vitamins and minerals. Maca has traditionally been used by natives in Peru to improve children’s performance in school. It is also traditionally believed to enhance strength, endurance, libido, and fertility. In addition, warriors, both Incan and Spanish consumed large amounts of Maca root before going into battle in order to increase their energy, prowess and recovery time.
The energetics and flavour of maca are earthy, sweet, nutty, warming and moistening. Maca has an affinity towards the endocrine system, nervous system, musculoskeletal system, and reproductive system of both woman and men. For possible support of endocrine system combine red maca with cordyceps, pine pollen or mucuna.
How to use
1.5–5 grams per day, always start off with a smaller dose and work your way up.
Maca Can be added to milk, cereal, yogurt fruit or smoothie.
