Pennyroyal, also known as Pudding Grass, Hillwort or Pulegium, is a perennial herb with a square stem, gray-green oval leaves and light purple flowers that grow in clusters. The flowers are pollinated to produce seed.
Mentha pulegium is in the Lamiaceae, or mint, family and native to North America, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Pennyroyal is the smallest of the mint family but its taste and odour are stronger and far more pungent than other mints. This family also includes common mints such as peppermint and spearmint.
Known for its intense aromatics Pennyroyal has a history of use since ancient Greece for its beneficial properties. Pennyroyal Leaf was used for flavouring in beverages and in cooking. It has also been used as traditional medicine among indigenous tribes in North America. As a tea, it was used to support the digestive system, soothe an upset stomach, and aid digestion. It was also traditionally used to reduce a fever by bringing on perspiration. Native American women used Pennyroyal to support the uterus and promote menstrual regularity and a smooth menstrual flow.
The taste and energetics of Pennyroyal are pungent, bitter, cooling and drying. Pennyroyal has an affinity towards the digestive system, lungs and uterus. Combine with Catnip to soothe an upset stomach. Combine with Motherwort to regulate menses when it is delayed due to stress or illness.
How to use:
Add 1 or 2 teaspoons of Pennyroyal to one cup of boiling water. Infuse for 10 minutes, strain and drink up to 4 cups for 1 or 2 days only.
