Rehmannia , a member of the Scrophulariaceae family, is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is especially valued for its ability to restore strength, replenish the blood, and nourish the kidneys and adrenal system.
When the root is gently steamed, it changes both chemically and energetically. The steaming process reduces certain compounds (like iridoid glycosides) but increases antioxidant activity. This transformation creates a deeper, warmer, and more restorative medicine.
Prepared (steamed) Rehmannia—often called Shu Di Huang—is used to:
-
Nourish the kidneys and liver
-
Support adrenal and hormonal balance
-
Promote healthy blood production and circulation
-
Improve vitality and resilience after illness or exhaustion
-
Ease symptoms such as dizziness, tinnitus, fatigue, and menstrual irregularity
Because it’s rich and dense, Rehmannia can sometimes feel heavy on digestion. To prevent this, it’s often prepared with a bit of cardamom or ginger, which help the body process its sweetness.
Energetics and Traditional Use
In TCM, Rehmannia is considered sweet, warm, and deeply nourishing, entering primarily the Kidney and Liver channels.
It is known for replenishing Yin energy—the cooling, moistening, and restorative aspect of our life force. When Yin is low, symptoms such as dryness, fatigue, anemia, hot flashes, or irritability may appear.
