The tea custom developed during the era of early Chinese imperial dynasties sometime between the years of 600 and 1300, a time when tea drinking was flourishing. Imperial tea gardens were being cultivated sometimes in secret to honour unusual and rare tea leaves. True silver needle tea as well as White Peony, come from the Fujian province of China and are cultivated from the original white teas of hundreds of years past.

The leaves and buds of White tea are picked just before they are fully open when they are still covered with fine white hairs. Then these buds and unfurled leaves are handpicked and carefully dried. White tea is the most antioxidant of all teas.  White tea is one of the most minimally processed of all the teas. White tea containers the highest concentration of an amino acid called L-theanine.  This can promote alertness as well as having a calming effect and helps to sustain energy. It is also lower in caffeine than green or black tea which may make it more hydrating.

Because White tea is less processed than other teas and may help burn up fat cells to promote weight loss.  Some dermatologists believe that antioxidants may help to protect the skin from free radicals and keep it healthy. You can use White tea topically to help with acne. Brew your tea and cool, then soak some cotton balls or a cloth and apply to your face for a few minutes and then rinse with cool water.

Properties:

White tea has a smooth and delicate flavour with a slightly sweet taste and slight perfume finish. White tea has an affinity for skin, blood sugar levels, immunity and liver. May also help to improve brain health.

For a tasty blend combine with Grapefruit, Hibiscus or Peppermint.

How to use:

1 teaspoon of White Tea leaves to one cup of almost boiling water, around 170º. Steep for 3-5 minutes, strain and drink up to three cups a day.

Cautions & contraindications:

Drinking more than four or five cups of tea a day may cause health problems, mainly because of caffeine related side effects.
