Hemidesmus indicus, known in Sanskrit as Anantamul, meaning “eternal root,” is a beloved creeping vine that graces the soils of India and much of southern Asia. Native to the Indian subcontinent, this fragrant healer can be found flourishing from the foothills of the Himalayas to the lush, humid lands of Kerala. It has also made its way to Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Indonesia, cherished wherever it takes root.
For thousands of years, Anantamul has been treasured in Ayurvedic medicine for its deeply purifying and rejuvenating nature. Classified as a Rasayana (a restorative herb promoting longevity and vitality) and a Tridosha Shamaka, it harmonizes all three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — restoring balance to the body’s inner ecology. Especially cooling and soothing to excess Pitta, it is often called upon to calm fiery conditions such as inflammation, skin irritations, and internal heat.
Taste & Aroma
The root of Indian Sarsaparilla carries a sweet, earthy, and woody essence, with delicate notes of vanilla, licorice, and cinnamon. It is a favored ingredient in cooling tonics and traditional herbal beverages throughout India, particularly during the warmer seasons to refresh the body and spirit.
