Uva Ursi is an evergreen shrub that grows low to the ground and is native to mountain areas in the northern hemisphere. Uva Ursi has thick leaves and urn-shaped flowers and is a member of the Ericaceae family.

The berries resemble bunches of grapes, which bears are known to eat. These berries are sometimes called Bear Berry and logically both Arcstaphylos and Uva Ursi means bear’s grape. In Canada and the USA it is often referred to as Kinnikinnick.

Uva ursi is an ancient astringent, though not used much in European medicine until reported by Welsh physicians in the 13th century. It  was reported to be used by Galen, a physician in the Roman Empire to stop bleeding.

In North America, Aboriginal medicine used Uva Ursi for inflammations of the urinary tract, especially cystitis.
