Pleurisy Root, also known as Butterfly Weed or Orange Milkweed, is a perennial plant with bright orange flowers and lanceolate leaves. The flowers are pollinated by many pollinators, especially butterflies, and seeds are produced. Asclepias tuberosa is a member of the Asclepiadaceae family and native to eastern North America.

Pleurisy Root was traditionally used by Native Americans to treat Pleurisy, which is a inflammation of the pleurae (serous membranes lining the thorax and enveloping the lungs), which impairs their lubricating function and causes pain when breathing. Pleurisy is caused by pneumonia and other diseases of the chest or abdomen.

Pleurisy Root was also applied to heal acute and chronic respiratory conditions such as bronchitis. It was used to help expel mucus from the lungs and bring down a fever. Pleurisy Root was later taken by European pioneers as well.
