Oakmoss (Evernia prunastri) – Essential Oil

Oakmoss is a species of lichen that has been valued in the perfume industry since the 16th century, generally, for its heavy oriental fragrance and as a fixative base. It is native to the mountainous areas throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere and yet has been found in Baskets in the ancient royal tombs of Egypt. Whether it was intended for perfume or for food is not known as Oak moss contains a starchy edible substance. A mixture of acids extracted from it is used in drugs for treating external wounds and infections.

Oakmoss essential oil has antiseptic properties that may help to prevent infections in open cuts and wounds. It is also anti-inflammatory and can aid in soothing swollen joints and bruises. Oakmoss oil also acts as an expectorant and can aid in the treatment of coughs and in helping to break down mucus in the respiratory tract. Added to any essential oil synergy, it will make the blend more stable and long lasting.

Blends well with: Anise, Ginger, Clary Sage, Vetiver, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Orange, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Lemon and Lime. 

How to Use:

• For topical use, add 10 drops of Oakmoss to a carrier oil and massage into desired areas to aid in soothing swollen joints and bruises.
• To aid in the treatment of coughs and in helping to break down mucus in the respiratory tract, try adding a few drops of the oil into a bowl of steaming water, cover your head with a towel and breathe in deeply.
