Urinary Tract Infection

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of the urinary tract. Most UTIs originate in the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body. UTIs are rarely serious when they affect otherwise healthy adults, but they can result in serious problems if not treated quickly. They can also cause complications in people with underlying health problems.

Continued information about Urinary Tract Infection:

Possible Causes of Urinary Tract Infection / UTI
UTIs are usually caused by bacteria from the digestive tract or rectum that begin to grow in the urethra and begin to multiply. From there the bacteria can travel to the bladder, resulting in a bladder infection, and if they are not expelled from the body, can continue up the ureters and infect the kidneys. UTIs affect women more often than men and the bacteria can be spread by sexual contact. Other risk factors include kidney stones, diabetes, enlarged prostate, sickle cell anemia and having a bladder catheter.

Possible Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection / UTI
Symptoms of UTIs include frequent and urgent need to urinate; pain in the abdomen and pelvic area; passing small amounts of urine; burning upon urination; cloudy, foul-smelling urine; blood in the urine; leaking urine; low back pain; fever and chills.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Urinary Tract Infection / UTI
UTIs can be prevented by drinking plenty of water, urinating when you feel the need, urinating after sex, washing genitals thoroughly, drinking cranberry juice and, for women, always wiping from front to back after bowel movements. Women should also avoid douches, feminine hygiene sprays and feminine hygiene products with deodorants. If a UTI is suspected, see a doctor for antibiotic treatment.
