Vitiligo is a skin condition that appears as chalky white patches of skin surrounded by a dark border. It’s a disorder of skin pigmentation which leads to progressively widening areas of depigmented (very white) skin. This disorder destroys melanocytes which are responsible for maintaing skin pigmentation. These spots can be on any part of the body in few or large quantities but may appear on both sides of the body in similar patterns and locations. The patches do not generally hurt or itch and are not a threat to health but can be cosmetically unattractive.

Continued information about Vitiligo:
Possible Causes of Vitiligo White spots associated with vitiligo occur because the cells that should be producing the skin pigment melanin are not present. Hair that grows on top of the affected area is also lacking in pigment and therefore appears white as well. The cause of Vitiligo is not known, but immune system problems can contribute to developing the condition.
Vitiligo may be linked to other diseases, including Addison's disease, pernicious anemia, and alopecia areata. Vitiligo has been known to occur after trauma to the skin from chemicals such as phenol and catechol. Physical and emotional stress may also aggravate or assist in the development of the condition.
Possible Symptoms of Vitiligo The main symptom on vitiligo is white patches on the skin that can be clumped together or spread throughout the body. White patches tend to appear on areas that are exposed to the sun, areas that surround body openings, body folds and sites of injuries.
Possible Lifestyle Changes for Vitiligo There is no sure way to prevent vitiligo, but it is important that anyone who suffers from the disorder use sunscreen on affected areas. White patches can be covered with makeup or self-tanning lotions.
