Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are wavy lines that appear on the stomach, thighs, buttocks and breasts during pregnancy or with rapid weight gain or loss. Once a person has stretch marks, they are permanent, but they often become less evident with time. Men and women can get stretch marks on several areas of the body, including the abdomen, hips, breasts, buttocks, upper arms and lower back.

Continued information about Stretch Marks:

Possible Causes of Stretch Marks
Stretch marks appear when the skin is overly stretched and the fibers in the dermis (middle layer of the skin) tear. These tears are most commonly caused by rapid weight gain and poor skin elasticity. Stretch marks are often tied to the increase in weight associated with pregnancy, but they can also appear in both men and women when the skin is stretched beyond its normal capacity. Medications containing cortisone can also lead to stretch marks.

Possible Symptoms of Stretch Marks
Stretch marks appear initially as red or purple streaks that are raised slightly from the surface of the skin. As time progresses, the marks change in color and appearance to become flat, white, shiny and much less noticeable.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Stretch Marks
Drink plenty of water to keep the skin healthy and hydrated. Apply cocoa butter or elastin cream to the affected areas of skin as directed on the product label. Take digestive enzymes to reduce scarring both internally and externally. Massage the areas of the body where stretch marks are most prevalent to reduce fatty deposits and increase circulation. Limit intake of caffeine or drink equal amounts of caffeinated drinks and water to off-set the effects of caffeine. Eat a diet high in protein and foods high in vitamins A, C and D.
