Enlarged Prostate

An enlargement of the prostate which may lead to problems with urine flow.

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located at the base of the bladder that surrounds the urethra, the tube through which urine exits the body. The prostate gland produces prostatic fluid, the main component of male ejaculate that helps nourish and transport the sperm. The most common problem associated with the prostate is benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. Enlargement of the prostate gland is usually seen in men over the age of fifty. The prostate can also become infected due to sexually transmitted disease or infections present elsewhere in the body. Prostate problems can range from minor conditions to life-threatening diseases and should not be taken lightly.

Continued information about Enlarged Prostate:

Possible Causes of Prostate Problems
The prostate gland may become infected by many organisms, including the one that causes gonorrhea. Infections elsewhere in the body may also be carried to the prostate gland through the bloodstream. Sometimes the prostate may become inflamed simply by enlargement of the gland or by excessive sexual activity. Truck drivers and heavy equipment operators are prone to develop inflammation of the prostate.

Possible Symptoms of Prostate Problems
Symptoms may include a slowing of the urine stream; increased frequency, urgency, or burning on urination with incomplete emptying of the bladder; fever may be present; bloody or cloudy urine; lower abdominal pain and distention; loss of appetite and weakness; and/or a hard lump in the fork of the thighs or rectum which becomes very painful when pressed.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Prostate Problems
Prostate problems can be prevented by eating a low fat diet made up of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats; drinking plenty of water; and getting regular exercise. Relax and take time during urination. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Enjoy regular sexual activity, which exercises the prostate gland. Be sure to have an annual prostate exam after age 50.
