Bowel Disease

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, also known as IBS or spastic colitis, is an illness characterized by intermittent abdominal cramps and constipation with alternating periods of diarrhea. IBS is the most common digestive disorder in the U.S. One in five Americans experiences symptoms of IBS, but less than half seek medical help for their symptoms. IBS usually affects people between the ages of 25 and 45; two thirds of the all IBS sufferers are female. IBS is a chronic condition, but the symptoms of the disorder can be managed effectively with a combination of medication and lifestyle changes.

Possible Causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome / IBS / Spastic Colitis
The exact cause of IBS is not known, but some experts think the condition stems from poor communication between the brain and the intestine. The condition is thought to be aggravated by stress and lack of fiber in the diet. Other potential causes include intestinal parasites, bacterial conditions, viral conditions, candidiasis (fungus) and gas.

Possible Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome / IBS / Spastic Colitis
The most common symptoms of IBS are alternating diarrhea and/or constipation associated with abdominal cramps. Periods of stress cause symptoms to worsen. The cramps can be located in any part of the stomach. Symptoms can range from mild to severe; however, sometimes the cramps are painful enough to prompt a visit to the emergency room.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Irritable Bowel Syndrome / IBS / Spastic Colitis
The first step to take in treating IBS is to increase fiber intake. Eat high fiber cereals, fruits and vegetables. A fiber supplement can also help alleviate symptoms. Avoid animal fats, butter, carbonated beverages, coffee, dairy products, fried foods, sugar and wheat products. Limit intake of gas-producing foods, such as beans, broccoli and cabbage. Drink plenty of fluids and get moderate daily exercise. Avoid alcoholic beverages and tobacco products. Chew food well and do not overeat. Wear loose fitting clothing and do not eat right before bedtime.
